New Jerseyans are all too aware of the horrible and dangerous effects of water scarcity. Water comes and goes easily, as we've discovered over the past few years. In reality, a serious problem that affects the entire country is a lack of water. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, 40 states should get ready for significant water shortages over the next ten years.

Both New Jersey and your power bill benefit from domestic water conservation. Here are 10 surprisingly easy ways to use less water in your house. You'll feel good knowing that you're helping your state save money and water.

1. Invest in WaterSense products.

The EPA bestows the WaterSense label on products that adhere to a number of essential water-conserving standards. WaterSense toilets, faucets, and showerheads:

  • At the very least, are equally effective to their less water-efficient counterparts.
  • A minimum of 20% more effective than comparable products in the market today.
  • Fulfill the National EPA water conservation criteria will result in the homeowner saving money on water because they will be able to measure their water savings.

According to the EPA, almost all fixtures and appliances that utilize water qualify for the WaterSense label. Switching to WaterSense fixtures is one of the best and simplest methods to save water in your home.

2. Shut off the faucet when not in use.

Are you using a toothbrush? Are your hands being washed? Turn off the water faucet when not in use. You can always turn it back on for a limited amount of time if you need it again. Even while this change may seem tiny (and it is! ), you'd be surprised at how much water it saves.

3. Identify leaks right away and fix them.

No matter how insignificant they may seem, hidden or neglected leaks waste a lot of water every year. Fix any leaking faucets, shoddy couplings, or hairline pipe cracks as soon as you notice them. Fixing leaks will protect your plumbing while also helping you conserve water.

4. Shorten your showers.

A normal (non-WaterSense) shower head can use up to five gallons of water per minute! As a result, cutting just two minutes off of your shower time might result in daily water savings of up to 10 gallons. Given that the average American consumes 80–100 gallons each day, that easily reduces your use by 10%. By taking deliberate showers, you might save a lot of time, water, and money. In this case, installing a water-saving shower head can be beneficial.

5. Don't use your dishwasher and washing machine.

Even though it could be appealing, washing your favorite item of clothing or running the dishwasher after every meal is wasteful. Never run the dishwasher or the washer before you have finished the entire load. By only seldom and on purpose using these two devices, you can save water. The use of machines is still more efficient than doing the laundry by hand, though.

6. Consider including a rain barrel.

The rainwater collection is perfect for homes with a lot of plants to maintain. You may irrigate your garden and lawn, as well as indoor and outdoor plants, with the water you gather. Rain barrels can help you save a surprisingly big quantity of water and are cheap, easy to maintain, and available everywhere. The less tap water you use, the more naturally occurring water you can reuse.

7. Reduce your utilization of power.

Perhaps to your surprise, power plants are cooled using hydro-powered technology. Water usage decreases as a result of using less electricity. Try to cut back on any unneeded electrical use. Fans should be turned off while leaving a room. Be sure to turn out the lights before going to bed. The daytime lighting in your home should come from natural sources. You'll save more money the more you can limit yourself.

8. Keep drinking water cool in the fridge.

Instead of running the faucet until the water is cold, keep cool drinking water in your refrigerator to avoid wasting water. Both the cost and the level of satisfaction will rise.

9. Keep the pool covered when not in use.

Pool covers preserve warmth by preventing evaporation. Pool covers can reduce the quantity of water that needs to be refilled by more than 50%, according to the Department of Energy. Covering it will reduce the amount of chemicals your pool uses and the cost of re-heating it. It is straightforward, uncomplicated, and cost- and water-efficient.

10. Steer clear of washing your car yourself.

You may need more than 100 gallons of water to wash your car in your driveway, did you know that? On the other hand, most commercial car washes use recirculating systems that vastly increase their capacity for water conservation. Even professional car washes, though, frequently use a lot of water. If you do decide to wash your car, we suggest doing so at a shop.

We Can Help You Maintain Your Reservoir Capacity

Did you know that you may check the water levels in the reservoirs in New Jersey online? It is always a good idea to implement new water-saving strategies, regardless of how much or how little water we have on a daily basis. Simply being diligent will do.

Do you still have concerns about how to increase the water efficiency of your home? Do you need help picking the best WaterSense shower head or installing a new fixture?
